One of us. Dmitry Popov

We continue to talk about our brave colleagues who decided to go all the way - for freedom for all Belarusians. Now, these people are prisoners, but any of us could have been in their place.

Dmitry Popov:
  • Moderator of social networks "A Country to Live in"
  • One of those detained in the "Tikhanovsky case"
  • Russian, in prison, renounced the citizenship of his country

Dmitry Popov is a citizen of Russia. He was involved in the deanonymization of security forces at home - "Male State" and "Scanner." In Belarus, he was a moderator of the social network "A Country to Live in." He was arrested shortly after the provocation and detention of Sergei Tikhanovsky.

He has been in custody since June 4, 2020. Before that, he recorded a video in which he said that the security forces were looking for him, and the apartment where he lived was searched. As a result, Dmitry Popov was charged under four criminal articles, including riots and incitement to hatred. He faces 15 years in prison.

Dmitry Popov hoped for help from the Russian state. In vain. In the summer, he complained that he had been visited by the consul only once in more than a year of imprisonment. At the same time, the meeting took place in the presence of a KGB officer. In addition, in custody, Popov was tortured. The Russian authorities did not lift a finger to rescue their citizen from the dungeons. Then Popov renounced Russian citizenship in a letter: "The country is ready to sacrifice its citizens in the interests of another country ... For me, this is a vile and cruel betrayal. I don't want and will not be a citizen of a traitorous country".

What is happening with Dmitry Popov once again proves the genetic affinity of the Belarusian and Russian regimes. They do not exist for the good of citizens but the preservation of dictators in power. "Russia, which has risen from its knees," turns a blind eye to the illegal detention of its citizens, who are being tortured on the territory of a neighboring country. This comes from the flawed geopolitical logic of keeping a sadist in power who is considered your ally.

Putin bet on a dead horse. Belarusians will not forgive him because Russia supported torture and murder in our country at a difficult moment.

Friends, remember that letters from the outside are critically crucial for political prisoners.
Please write to Dmitry Popov right now.
