On March 25, we celebrate Freedom Day, commemorating the 106th anniversary of the Belarusian People's Republic (BNR) proclamation. This year's celebrations will be held under the "BNR106" label.
The BNR declared Belarus' independence from the Russian Empire in 1918, marking the first official declaration of independence in Belarusian history.
Although the republic itself was short-lived, its influence on Belarusian identity and the fight for independence remains significant. The BNR's legacy extends beyond independence. In the 1990s, when the Belarusian democratic opposition sought alternative narratives to Soviet ideology, the BNR provided a valuable historical anchor.
The 2020 protests further solidified the white-red-white flag and Pahonia coat of arms, symbols associated with the BNR, as powerful unifiers. The BNR Council, established during the republic's existence, continues to operate today as the oldest government-in-exile. This highlights a historical tradition of free governments functioning in exile when necessary.
