Irina McLean: "If we don't remember about political prisoners, the world certainly won't"

Irina McLean, the guardian of political prisoner Sergey Glebko, talks about participating in a joint information company of our Fund and the initiative Dissidentby.com in support of political prisoners "Until All Are Free".

"As a social worker and someone who has worked with families for many years, I know how any traumatic situation affects children. So it was important to me that the political prisoner I take care of had a family and children. Sergey Glebko has three wonderful girls. Naturally, everything that happens has already affected them. It's a trauma they may carry for the rest of their lives.

If we don't remember our political prisoners, the world certainly won't remember them. Therefore, it seems to me that the duty of every free Belarusian is to speak up and do what can help political prisoners. It is the work that unites us at the moment.

I regularly communicate with Sergey's wife, trying to uphold her psychologically. Katya conveys words of support from me to Sergey."

Irina McLean is a member of the Board of Trustees of the "A Country to Live In" Fund. She was born and raised in Belarus. She lives in Scotland for a long time and actively helps political prisoners and other Belarusians affected by the actions of the dictatorial regime.

Sergey Glebko was arrested in March 2022, shortly after the start of Russia's war against Ukraine. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison for setting fire to logs to disrupt railway traffic. Sergey Glebko was severely beaten upon arrest. He has been listed as a terrorist and extremist.
