Mikhail Rubin: "We must not forget about political prisoners"

Guardians continue to share stories about their wards-prisoners within the framework of a joint information campaign of our Foundation and the Dissidentby initiative "Untill All are Free".  This time, Mikhail Rubin tells us about Yuri Adamov.

"Yuri is my colleague, an IT specialist, a scientist. He is one of the initiators and promoters of the idea of free software in Belarus. He suffered for helping others. These were the main reasons why I became Yuri’s guardian.

We must not forget about political prisoners, especially here in the West, where we live a full life every day. We must help them as much as we can, but in ways that won’t harm their safety or worsen the already difficult situation they are in, or trigger further repression.

It is important to maintain Yuri's presence in the media. A recent example occurred last week during the summer reception of the Liberal Entrepreneurs Association of the State of Hessen, where I live. Among those present were many Bundestag deputies and other German parliamentarians of various levels. I discussed Yuri's fate with Peter Heidt, a member of the Bundestag’s civil rights commission.

In the near future, I will participate in a large scientific and practical conference on artificial intelligence, where I will also draw attention to our colleague's plight.

Yuri Adamov is a participant in the Belarusian free software community and one of the creators of the scientific and educational samizdat "Pamylka." Yuri studied theoretical physics at Belarusian State University, earned a PhD in the UK, and conducted research in American labs and universities. He was sentenced to three years in prison for donating to charitable funds.

Mikhail Rubin is an IT entrepreneur, a member of the Сoordination Сouncil and the board of trustees of the "A Country to Live in" foundation, a former municipal deputy, and head of the commission for the integration of the Liberal Democratic Party in the land of Hessen in Germany.
