Olga Gorbunova, guardian of political prisoner Galina Derbysh, talks about participating in the joint information campaign of our Foundation and the Dissidentby.com initiative in support of political prisoners "Until All Are Free".
"Galina Derbysh is about the age of my mother. I was very excited by her story, the circumstances of her life and how easily Galina was sentenced to such a huge sentence without any evidence. I wanted people to know about her, remember and support her.
Taking care of political prisoners is important because this is our responsibility, which we have been bearing since the events of 2020. Political prisoners are all of us, some people are just lucky and others are not. When it seems that I have no strength, I think about what it’s like for them there, and immediately the opportunity arises to write a letter, send a donation, call their relatives.
I helped with finding information about receiving medical care after transfer to a colony, looking for samples of requests and complaints. I am in touch with Galina’s daughter, who has gone abroad, and I support her. I publicly inform about the story of Galina Derbysh and urge you to help other political prisoners."
Galina Derbysh is a pensioner from the agricultural town of Obukhovo, Grodno region. She was sentenced in the "Autukhovich case" to 20 years in prison and a fine of 22,400 rubles. At the trial she repeatedly stated about threats and pressure from the investigation. She is suffering from cancer.
Olga Gorbunova is a representative of the United Transitional Cabinet for Social Policy, a feminist, an expert in preventing domestic violence, an LGBT activist, a former political prisoner. After the verdict of court was announced and she was released from the pre-trial detention center, she left Belarus.
