Political prisoner Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk not released

Political prisoner Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk, who was expected to be released on May 21, 2024, remains in custody. This was reported by her husband, Andrei Sharenda. According to him, Palina was transferred from colony No. 24 on May 19, and her whereabouts were kept secret. It was later revealed that she had been detained for three days and is currently being held in the Gomel pre-trial detention center at the request of the Rechitsa branch of the Investigative Committee.

Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk has been charged under Article 411 of the Criminal Code of Belarus for persistent disobedience to the demands of the administration of the correctional institution, which carries a penalty of up to one year of imprisonment. She spent almost her entire term in a punitive isolation cell, except for the time when she was forced, under the threat of new charges, to appear in a propaganda film.

Pressure on Palina is being applied in various ways. For example, today a 30-kilogram package arrived for her at the detention center, but according to our Foundation's sources, the package was not accepted.

Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk was detained in January 2021 and sentenced to two years of imprisonment for insulting the president, a government official, and for violence against a police officer. Her sentence was extended by one year in April 2022 and by another year in October 2023 under Article 411 of the Criminal Code.

Earlier, we reported that Palina is fighting at the cost of her life, and this is what she conveyed from prison. The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, impressed by Palina's story, has become her symbolic godmother.
